Seinäjoki is a regional city in South Ostrobothnia, western Finland, around 360 km north of Helsinki. The city developed around an important railway junction, making the station a significant part of both its history and everyday life. Asemakaava took place at a moment when the station area was undergoing major redevelopment and the existing railway station was due to be demolished. I wanted to create a temporary space where people could stop, spend time together and leave a physical trace of their relationship with a place that was about to disappear. During one weekend, I invited passengers, local residents, railway users and passers-by to collectively embroider a map of Seinäjoki railway station and its surroundings. The project operated as an open, drop-in artwork. No previous experience was required. Someone could contribute a few stitches while waiting for a train, stay for a longer conversation, or come specifically to participate. Embroidery introduced a deliberately slow and tactile process into a space normally defined by movement, schedules, arrivals and departures. As people worked, conversations emerged about travelling, memories of the station, the city and its transformation. Each participant added a small individual gesture. Together, these gestures gradually formed a collective record of the station — not an accurate geographical map, but a map shaped by memory, encounters, time and human presence. Asemakaava continued my interest in temporary and transitional spaces, participation and the ways people make places their own. The railway station became, briefly, not only somewhere to pass through but somewhere to stop, make and be together. In her artistic work she has been reimagining traditional art forms by pushing the borders and going beyond the surface of narrative meanings.Through the years she has been exploring a multi-layered proximity of human body to space, time, sounds, objects and environment. In her latest works Lapitskaya approached the following themes, among others: human loneliness and togetherness, identity, participation, difference, sameness, tolerance. Anna Anisimova is a author of more than 13 books for children. She was born in 1983 in the small village Kropotkin in Eastern Siberia and spent her childhood there, among little mountains called «goltsy» and cedar elfin, in a very cold place where people mine gold—her book Kedrovyi Slonik (Cedar Little Elephant) tells about this place. Anna studied at Novosibirsk State University that is located in a Siberian scientific center called Akademgorodok. She is a journalist by diploma specialty. But while studying at the university Anna worked on the creation of newspapers for children and also she worked in the children's camps and created stories with children. Therefore when she started working as a journalist and editor she realized that writing for children is the thing that she like to do the most. I have held workshops in Finland and in Japan, for groups of people ranging from textile professionals to a group home residents, people age 4 years and up, male and female participants. I had picked up several packages of sponges, they appealed to me with their uniformity, squishiness, and colour variety. I had made some experiments with sponges at the Kura house residency, and then decided to invite the workshop participants to play with these everyday materials. I reappropriate old tins and cans and plastic bags, and use camping equipment as tools. I am constantly in the process of developing a kit, a set of materials and tools that I carry with me. The use of a variety of shapes and textures draw from open-ended toys and games for children, including the techniques and the aesthetics of Waldorf toys. Hand dyed using natural materials found at home like coffee and tea and frozen berries and beets leftover from dying Easter eggs. I use recycled materials like leftover fabric and packaging material. The fabrics and other materials that the books are made from allow for them to be washed and ironed. Just the other day I was thinking that I can’t wait to go there again, but what if the cottage burns down or something? Or if something else happens and it’s no longer there, what would I do? A Finnish mökki and a Russian dacha usually refer to a seasonal holiday home in the countryside. We have also approached a phenomenon that has been discussed in the Finnish media in recent years, that of Russians buying land and holiday homes in lake areas that are considered a Finnish national landscape. Финский коттедж (фин.“мёкки”) и русская дача - это небольшой летний дом вдали от города. Проект Анастасии Артемьевой и Лиисы Алфорс Mökki / Дача представляет собой художественную манифестацию исследования сходств и различий дачного отдыха в культуре двух стран. Отправной точкой нашей коллаборации стали как личные, так и политические факторы. У наших семей не было дачи, не смотря на то, что иметь собственную дачу было модно и распространено. С другой стороны, нам также интересен феномен, обсуждаемый в финской медиа в последнее время. Речь идет о русских гражданах, покупающих дома и участки в Финляндии на берегу озёр - в местах, символизирующих финское национальное достояние. С помощью нашей выставки мы хотим рассмотреть русскую и финскую дачную традицию как институцию, выражающую самоидентичность нации. Для этого мы решили узнать мнения о дачном отдыхе по обе стороны границы. С помощью фотографий из личных архивов, предметов, воспоминаний, и историй, собранных от финских, а так же эмигрировавших в Финляндию русских дачников, мы сделали инсталляцию, которая станет общим летним домом посреди города. Liisa Ahlforsin ja Anastasia Artemevan suomalais-venäläinen yhteistyö Mökki / Дача on taiteellinen ilmentymä tutkimusmatkasta näiden kahden maan ja kulttuurin vapaa-ajan asuntojen yhteneväisyyksiin ja eroavaisuuksiin. Yhteistyömme lähtökohdat ovat sekä henkilökohtaiset että poliittiset. Kummankaan taiteilijan lapsuuden perheellä ei ole ollut kesämökkiä tai datsaa – huolimatta niiden tavanomaisuudesta molemmissa kulttuureissa. Samalla olemme tarttuneet suomalaisessa mediassa viime vuosina puhuttaneeseen ilmiöön, eli venäläisten maa- ja vapaa-ajan asuntokauppoihin suomalaiseksi kansallismaisemaksi mielletyiltä järvialueilta. Based on personal observations, factual research and interviews, the work focuses on what we see from below the horizon.&nbsp; <img width="444" height="670" width_o="444" height_o="670" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e5bcc95e0ec6ec55f4a6b6d80885b78993d81078c087b38da5bdaca628efe7d4/IMGP9737.JPG" data-mid="1305652" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/444/i/e5bcc95e0ec6ec55f4a6b6d80885b78993d81078c087b38da5bdaca628efe7d4/IMGP9737.JPG" /> Helsinki Underground starts at the entrance to Kalasatama metro station. The tour lasts 20 min and includes a visit to the otherwise inaccessible to general public turning point of the metro route in Ruoholahti. It was part of HKL Taidelinja and Gaming the System exhibitions in September 2015. <img width="445" height="670" width_o="445" height_o="670" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/286dac6b77b479403a7df5658bc0cbb1feca4babaf9799ea3296d8089dba8ac4/IMGP9589.jpg" data-mid="1305651" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/445/i/286dac6b77b479403a7df5658bc0cbb1feca4babaf9799ea3296d8089dba8ac4/IMGP9589.jpg" /> Underground, time and place are different to those outside. Travelling in a metro car, we perceive the landscape around us based purely on the fact that we know the location through our intelligence, and distinct it from another by a sense of belonging, feeling that here is home, Helsinki, and not Paris or Tokyo, even though we cannot see the landscape to prove it. This notion also echoes the idea of guided tours being associated with visiting a new place, and wanting to learn about it, quickly. That, in turn, represents temporality, tourism, the concept of “just visiting”. By contrast, there are no criteria for permanent presence in a city. How can you know a place enough to be able to call yourself a local? It seems that public transport plays an important role in our process of settling in to a place. After a while we learn the bus time table and the most convenient metro car by heart and start helping lost tourists by giving directions to Kamppi. Do we belong to a city or does a city belong to us? <img width="5000" height="3321" width_o="5000" height_o="3321" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/518a908e3fc7e6f21ae4ed62c4918ca3d5929838931fa6d942ca899c2a9395a0/IMGP97531_o.jpg" data-mid="1305653" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/518a908e3fc7e6f21ae4ed62c4918ca3d5929838931fa6d942ca899c2a9395a0/IMGP97531_o.jpg" /> Tram Tales Helsinki2015 <img width="700" height="467" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/q/94/i/68e7f09e44525feacf86a4fb050ece4970024acc37d492d4f89ce40e26a234db/2014_0331_1134_18_o.jpg" style="width: 663.266px; height: 442.493px;">Tram Tales Helsinki is a project carried out to investigate urban space. The aim was to experiment and rethink the idea of public and private, of the ownership of the city and the possibilities of involving the audience without pressuring them into participation. Through mixing facts and fiction, the intention was to question authority of a tour guide, educational figure and show that people believe what they want to believe. For the performance in March 2014 the route of the tram number 6 in Helsinki, from Arabia to Sörnäinen was chosen. <img width="809" height="566" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/809/q/94/i/a0497ce3419c31fec052bf47e1acd4a932ad7a6672a8bab942c758517055cf46/Capture_o.JPG" style="width: 663.266px; height: 464.04px;"> The idea was to lead a tour of Helsinki to classmates and the people who were just going about their business on the tram. It started at the first stop so there everyone participating in the tour could sit together, at the back of the tram, to get a better view outside. The artist stood up in front of the group and spoke, as the tram was going on its usual route. <img width="700" height="478" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/q/94/i/27101241daaf9c636e81a9c04ac0b98730525e77e8b814d4b64dfa378300890f/Tram-1_o.jpg" style="width: 663.266px; height: 452.916px;">The tour included real historical facts, which found online, for example: The name Arabia comes from the fact that it was so far from the city centre, so when the region was built, in the 19th century, the streets were name after romanticized places like Arabia, India and Damascus. After the 1995, when the housing area was developed, was also the time when Finland joined the EU so the streets were named after London, Berlin and other European places. Some appropriation of facts took place to suit the location: Mikhail Bulgakov, who was a Russian writer born in the Ukraine and moved to Helsinki in 1920, in fact, lived on the tram. Some personal observations about the area were also made:Please note the drying racks on the balconies of apartments, and how now they are mostly used to hang a decorative lantern. Look at the interesting way people decorate their windows – some leftover Christmas ornaments like stars and snowflakes. The observations were based on a previous visual research by the artist of the area. Some completely made up facts also were presented: The half-erased Christmas tree on the window actually resembled the old Finnish tradition of not taking the Christmas tree from the house altogether once the season is over, but, in the lead up to Easter, removing the branches one by one and burning them.The guide stopped talking at the stops so not to disturb people getting on and off the tram. The journey lasted for about 10 minutes.The group was listening attentively, asking questions and making comments. No one from the passengers got involved in the conversation, but some people seemed to be listening. The performance created a situation where interaction wasn’t necessary, that people had an opportunity to just sit and listen.One of the possibilities for further development of the performance would be to have some tour-guide features like a badge and a high-visibility vest and have a microphone. On the other hand, it seems more inclusive to create the least separation possible, to look like a normal person.<img width="700" height="467" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/q/94/i/ea492411d3f3c5a638844d62e226aaa556e81b3520f80ea6219f9bcf1490e6b4/Tram-2_1_o.jpg" style="width: 663.266px; height: 442.493px;"> The fact that not everyone could hear the tour, or understand it as it was lead through the English language presumably posed an obstacle to some of the audience, yet the idea was not to educate (or mislead) the people by presenting them with contextual information, but rather showcase a possibility of claiming the public space and the encourage to take interest in the otherwise mundane environment. Herbert Marcuse, speaking against application of any ideologies through art, stated that the truth of art lies in its power to break the monopoly of established reality (i.e., of those who established it) to define what is real. For him, the art was in the gesture, in the statement of making the people question authority and see alternative possibilities.
