Inivisible Neighbours

Invisible Neighbours (Näkkymättömät Naapurit) project took place in September – October 2015, in collaboration with Kalasataman Taidetalkoot community art project of Performance art centre Eskus and Annika Niskanen. The idea was to make a connection between the inmates of Helsinki prison Sörkka and the residents of the nearby blocks of flats. For the duration of six weeks, the two groups made and signed postcards for each other at the meetings held both inside and outside the prison. We talked about our living environments, shared recepies, composed haiku, drew with fresh blueberry juice and made collective self-portraits.
There was a core group of 5 participants on each side. The age of participants ranged from 3 to 60 years. To preserve the anonymity required by the prison, each of the neighbours made their own stamps and used them to identify as the author of the cards.
The program allowed for a creative exchange between the prisoners and other people living in the Sörnäinen neighbourhood - two groups who do not interact on a daily basis, yet share same space of our city. We wanted get to know the men living behind the wall from us.
Syksyllä 2015 toteutettu Näkymättömät Naapurit oli Helsingin vankilan asukkaiden ja sen naapuruston välillä toteutettu yhteisötaideteos, jossa vangit ja naapurit lähettivät toisilleen itse tekemiään postikortteja. Postikorteissa toisilleen tuntemattomat, vankilan muurin molemmin puolin asuvat ihmiset kuvasivat erilaisten teemojen ja materiaalein kautta jokapäiväistä elämäänsä. Alkuperäiset postikortit jäivät aina vastaanottajille lahjaksi, mutta korteista tehty valokuvanäyttely oli esillä Kallio Kunsthallessa 16.5.-22.5.2016.
